Gannets are fighters, they battle each other to the point of exhaustion over the smallest amount of territory and in this instance a breeding pair tragically didn't recognise each other, they fought each other past first blood, the female in the foreground had taken the eye of the male. As a result the male, unable to fetch seaweed to build the nest, sat there with his head under his wing in pain. both partners covered in blood.
