Having set sail for the South Atlantic, the small island Isla Magdalena in the Strait of Magellan was our first stop, and my first opportunity to see penguins at close range. Among the colony, this young Magellanic Penguin stood out as it called loudly for a returning parent, hoping to be rewarded with a meal.
This portrait reveals details that aren't noticed from a distance, from the texture of its fluffy juvenile coat to the serrated teeth like structures inside the beak, highlighting some of the cool adaptations these penguins have to survive here.
